Description
Large synchronous motors are still being used in large AC motor pumping applications with variable frequency drive, 5,000 to 15,0000 HP VFDs. Those motors start up as induction motors, but have a DC winding in the rotor with slip rings leading to a shaft mounted DC generator or exciter. A 1hp VFD changes the rotor winding excitation to make it synchronize or lock-in to AC line frequency. By adjusting the excitation you can also adjust the Power Factor of the motor, to make 1hp VFD drive leading rather than lagging as is usual for induction motors. In this way one large synch.
