Silicone rubber has many advantages compared to other rubber types. With its special characteristics, silicone rubber is widely used for certain requirement.
Some special characteristics of silicone rubber:
Silicone rubber can be used for medical and food contact as it is inert, odorless, tasteless, and stainless. Examples of silicone rubber applications for medical include: Dummies for baby, catheters, tubing for dialysis and transfusion equipment, bellows for artificial respirators.
Silicone rubber is used for product required contact with high temperature as it has wide range temperature applications, from -100° C to 250° C, and it has an excellent thermal resistance. Example application is silicone extrusions for profiles, tube, cord, seals and gasket.
Silicone rubber is very durable, it can stand to weather, oxidation, ozone and corona.
With low water adsorption characteristic, Silicone rubber has superior water resistance.
Silicone rubber has superior dielectric and insulation characteristics.
Silicone rubber has good flexibility property. Example application of good flexibility silicone rubber:

Silicone Rubber also has some limitation due to these below characteristics:
Relatively high cost.
Some grades of silicone rubber have poor hydrocarbon, oil and solvent resistance.
Vulcanized rubbers display poor tensile properties.
High gas permeability (not always a problem).
