How to Clean Fingerprints Off Kitchen Cabinets

matter what kind of finish is on your kitchen cabinets, they will get fingerprints on them. Greasy, soiled fingers searching for a measuring cup in the middle of baking or meal preparation, a child looking for his favorite snack -- all result in smudges and smears on those otherwise clean cabinets. Clean the fingerprints as soon as possible; otherwise, some of the smudges and smears may dry in place, becoming more difficult to remove.

Finished Wood Fingerprint Removal

A soft cloth such as a tea towel or microfiber cloth may be enough to remove fingerprints from finished wood cabinets. Rub the area gently with the dry cloth. If the dry cloth doesn& acute;t clean the area, wet part of the fabric and wring out most of the water. Wipe the fingerprints again and immediately buff the area dry. Make sure the area is completely dry to keep the wood from absorbing water if the finish is thin, as many wood cabinets aren& acute;t designed to be withstand saturation with liquid. These dry-wet treatment methods can also be used on other cabinet surfaces, such as melamine, laminates, glass-door fronts or metal handles, before using harsher cleaning methods.

Tough Fingerprint Removal

Some fingerprints, such as those with sauce or food-based grease on them, need a more thorough cleaning. A soft cloth dipped into mildly soapy water removes fingerprints from wood and other cabinet surfaces when water alone won& acute;t work. Buff the prints with the soapy cloth, followed by another cloth dipped in water and wrung out so it is barely wet. If the cabinets are made of melamine or a surface that can withstand a small amount of scrubbing, use a scrub sponge to remove spots that don& acute;t come off easily with a soft cloth. Once cleaned, wipe up the area with a dry cloth, ensuring the cabinet surface is completely dry to avoid damage to the finish.

Glass Cabinet Fronts

For a cabinet with glass doors, fingerprints may affect the glass as well as the wood trim. Wipe the glass portions of the cabinet doors with a soft lint-free cloth dipped in vinegar, first squeezing out most of the vinegar so the cloth is damp, not soaked. Gently wipe the glass with the vinegar and allow it to air dry. If the entire glass front is covered with fingerprints, spray the vinegar onto the glass, then wipe with a lint-free cloth.
